CreateLab is looking for talented, motivated masters and undergraduate students for its collaborative research in the 2021 Summer. The expected duration is from May 16, 2021 through August 15, 2021 (i.e., the summer semester at UIUC); however, we can also incorporate your schedule since the period of summer semesters could vary a lot depending on the institutions you are attending (if you are not a UIUC student).
If you are an UIUC student, you may pursue this project in conjunction with Summer REU.
We will build a novel document indexing system (called Airphant) as an open-source project. Airphant is a system for supporting keyword-based document searches, but we will completely design the internals of the system (from scratch) to offer extremely fast latencies in modern cloud environments. To achieve this, unlike existing systems such as ElasticSearch, Solr, and others, we have developed a novel approximate index structure (called IoU), which enables extremely efficient inverted index retrieval compared to traditional techniques.
While our collaborative research will require enterprise-grade code quality and testing frameworks, its core technology relies on a statistical data structure. For this reason, the participants in this project are requested to have good understandings of probability and statistics as well as programming skills.
Toward the end of the summer, we will open-source our GitHub repository. The contributors of this project will be listed on the page.
While it is not strictly required, we prefer the students with the following background:
- Have programming experience in Java and Python
- Have experience in unit testing, with JUnit or similar
- Have knowledge in database management systems
- Have taken probability / statistics courses
- Have taken machine learning-related courses
How to Apply
If you are interested in this project, please send an email to Yongjoo Park (email@example.com) with its title set to “(CreateLab) Your name; 2021 Summer Research”. Please enclose your CV in the email.
What happens next: If you are considered to meet initial qualifications, Yongjoo will contact you in a week to set up a brief Zoom call.
What happens after the summer?
Unless you explicitly express interests in continuing your research in the team, it is expected that your contribution will discontinue at the end of the summer semester.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to hearing from you.
